A Letter To Betty MacDonald

Dear Betty MacDonald,

I am called a Newage Dreamer.

Your Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle series are great.

They are so funny that I once was about to fall off my chair.

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle’s Magic is my favourite till now.

Please write more funny books for us children, if possible.

In Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle’s Magic, I liked the chapter, The Thought-You-Saiders cure the most.

Like the part they said,”Marilyn’s mother said Marilyn fell off her coaster and hurt her head, and they thought she said, Marilyn fell in the toaster and was burnt up dead.” It was so funny.

The other chapter I liked a lot was, The Never-Want-To-Go-To-Schoolers Cure.

I liked the time were Jody kept on tricking his mother, and his mother acted so dumply.
The other chapters were good, but not as funny as the others.

Your first book was also funny. Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle the book that she told stories to teach people good lessons, was terrific for the first book of the series.

Betty MacDonald how nice it would be if you read this letter from me to you.

Best regards,

A Newage Dreamer

The amazing, very witty, charming, intelligent story written by our brilliant Betty MacDonald Fan Club Honor Member - artist and writer Letizia Mancino.

WHEN YOU DREAM, DREAM BIG

Translated by D. Tsiaprakas

Betty, I love you! Your books „Anybody can do anything“ and „Onions in the Stew“ are really outstanding! I take them into my hand, and at a stone's throw I am right away in America ! Columbus and the egg: The great discovery!

Your bestseller „The Egg and I“ the greatest discovery. And you and I! I know America: It's true what you are writing: That's America: Absolutely right! No, even to the least detail! The landscape and the passion: Do you know the country where pistols blossom? Brava, Betty, you are describing the Americans vividly, genuinely, insufferably, brushed upon paper. If I like to read your works? To read doesn't even express it! I can even hear and see everything: Nature, culture, subculture.

America has almost remained unchanged! O those cool Americans! Calculating, stockmarket, Wall Street, the financial crisis (even back in 1930), the gamblers, the bankruptcy of companies! The swarming of dodgers and cheaters. People left without money. Dispair und hunger! A terrible „Worst Case“ (when I knew but little English I thought it is sausage with cheese).

Still how impressive is the ability to adaptone self of the Americans: They know how to enjoy life, acrobats of survival! In the twinkle of an eye they achieved to adapt themselves and effect the work of pioneers: In the morning you are a cleaningwoman, in the evening a brothel woman! No problem!

„The insufficient, here it's becoming an event; The indescribable, here it's done;“ Mary Bard Jensen, your sister, was the treasure trove of procuring work: My word, what a power woman with unlimited imagination! She has recommended you everywhere: Betty can do everything, also write novels! Go ahead, sister, hurry up! The editor wants to see your manuscripts! Up to that point you had not written a single line! Wow! And if still everything goes wrong? No problem: When you dream, dream big!

Just look, you have become famous. The Egg and I You know that, Betty? I'll slip into „The Egg and I“ and come and be your guest! I want to get to know your chickens. I hate chickens! I'm a chickens slave from North America! O Betty, without these damned animals, no chance of you becoming famous! „The Egg and I“ you would never have written! How many readers you have made happy!

Your book is so amusing! Your witty fine (almost nasty) remarks about your family members and roundabout neighbours made me laugh so much! You have been born into a special family: Comfort was not desired: I can't but be amazed: What did your father say to your mother? After tomorrow I am going to work elsewhere: Thousands of miles away...He sent her a telegram: LEAVING FOR TWO YEARS ON THURSDAY FOR MEXICO CITY STOP GET READY IF YOU WANT TO COME ALONG – That was on Monday. Mother wired back: SHALL BE READY, and so she was. That's America! Improvisation, change, adventure. You show no weakness: Let's go! Your descriptions, Betty, about the tremendous happenings in nature have deeply frightened me.

Continent America, I'm terrified by you! I feel so small and threatened like a tiny fly before an enormous flyswatter! Your novel is very many-sided! The reader may use it even as a cook book! „The Egg and I“ starts straight away with a recipe: „Next to the wisdom that lamb meat doesn't taste good unless it has been roasted with garlic“. Do you enjoy the American food?

O Betty, it's too fatty for me and I hate garlic! (Betty is presently cooking lunch for Bob. She's continually talking to „STOVE“: STOVE is Bob's rival; in the beginning I thought it was being himself). She turns round and says: Well, so no garlic for you. No lamb either, Betty. I don't eat any meat! I'd actually prefer only fried eggs. Betty, let me make them myself. Then you try it!

Blow! „STOVE“ out of order! I don't succeed in turning it on! Damned! It's got more of a mind of its own than „STOVE“ of my friend, Hilde Domin! Bob's coming! He must eat directly! „Men eat anything, the swines! Says your grandmother Gammy“. Is it true? Do you like my chickens? Bob asked me without introducing himself. Yes, Bob (rude) I love them! I'm vegetarian. Do you want to clean the henhouse with me tomorrow? A, you're always getting up so early at four o'clock! Bob, that's not a job for me! He looked at me disdainfully! A Roman cissy! You need a reeducation at once! Help, Bob's attacking me! I rather change the novel immediately and move to the „Island“!

LONDON — A British lawmaker was shot and killed Thursday in a daylight attack in the town she represented, police said.
Labour legislator Jo Cox was attacked just before 1 p.m. in Birstall, northern England, Acting Chief Constable Dee Collins of West Yorkshire Police said. She was pronounced dead by a doctor less than an hour later.
A 77-year-old man was injured.
A 52-year-old man has been arrested and Collins said police believe it is a "lone incident'' and are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said "the whole of the Labour Party and Labour family — and indeed the whole country — will be in shock at the horrific murder of Jo Cox today.''
Both the Vote Leave and Britain Stronger in Europe campaigns suspended activity ahead of next week's vote over whether Britain should remain a part of the 28-member bloc at the news.
Violence against politicians is rare in Britain, as are gun attacks, and figures from all parts of the political spectrum expressed deep shock.
Prime Minister David Cameron said he was cancelling a planned speech in Gibraltar after "the terrible attack.''
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Jo and her family,'' Cameron tweeted.
The rival sides in the referendum have been canvassing feverishly ahead of what is expected to be a close vote and Cox had been campaigning for the "remain'' camp.

It wasn't clear if the attack on her was linked to the EU debate.
Britain's Press Association news agency quoted eyewitness Hithem Ben Abdallah as saying Cox got involved in a scuffle between two men in Birstall, 320 kilometres north of London.
Abdallah said one of the men was fighting with Cox and then a gun went off twice and "she fell between two cars and I came and saw her bleeding on the floor.''
"She fell between two cars and I came and saw her bleeding on the floor.''
Clarke Rothwell, who runs a nearby cafe, told the BBC he believed Cox had been shot and stabbed multiple times.

"Three times she was shot, the initial time which then she dropped to the floor and two more times,'' he said. "The third time he got close proximity he shot her around the head area.''
"In the meantime he was stabbing her as well. He was stabbing her with his knife.''
Shopkeeper Sanjeev Kumar told the BBC said he saw a woman lying on the ground "bleeding from the mouth and nose,'' with two women trying to help her.
After around 15 minutes, witnesses said emergency services arrived and tended to her with a drip.
"He was stabbing her with his knife.''
Cox, a former worker for charities who is married with two young children, was elected to the House of Commons in the May 2015 general election.

She has been one of the most outspoken lawmakers on the subject of the Syrian civil war, and has been critical of Britain's reluctance to deepen its military involvement against the Islamic State group as part of efforts to end it.
In the past two decades, two other British lawmakers have been attacked during their "surgeries,'' regular meetings where constituents can present concerns and complaints.
A Labour legislator was stabbed in the stomach and injured in May 2010 by a female student radicalized by online sermons from an al-Qaida-linked preacher.
In 2000, Liberal Democrat lawmaker Nigel Jones and his aide Andrew Pennington were attacked by a man wielding a sword during such a meeting. Pennington was killed and Jones injured in the attack in Cheltenham, England.

Germany's Merkel says refugees must return home once war is over

NEUBRANDENBURG, Germany | By Andreas Rinke

Reuters/Fabrizio Bensch

German Chancellor Angela Merkel tried on Saturday to placate the increasingly vocal critics of her open-door policy for refugees by insisting that most refugees from Syria and Iraq would go home once the conflicts there had ended.Despite appearing increasingly isolated, Merkel has resisted pressure from some conservatives to cap the influx of refugees, or to close Germany's borders.
Support for her conservative bloc has slipped as concerns mount about how Germany will integrate the 1.1 million migrants who arrived last year, while crime and security are also in the spotlight after a wave of assaults on women in Cologne at New Year by men of north African and Arab appearance.
The influx has played into the hands of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD), whose support is now in the double digits, and whose leader was quoted on Saturday saying that migrants entering illegally should, if necessary, be shot.
Merkel said it was important to stress that most refugees had only been allowed to stay for a limited period.
"We need ... to say to people that this is a temporary residential status and we expect that, once there is peace in Syria again, once IS has been defeated in Iraq, that you go back to your home country with the knowledge that you have gained," she told a regional meeting of her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Merkel said 70 percent of the refugees who fled to Germany from former Yugoslavia in the 1990s had returned.
Horst Seehofer, leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), the CDU's Bavarian sister party, has threatened to take the government to court if the flow of asylum seekers is not cut.
Merkel urged other European countries to offer more help "because the numbers need to be reduced even further and must not start to rise again, especially in spring".
A MILLION MORE
Fabrice Leggeri, the head of the European Union's border agency Frontex, said a U.N. estimate that up to a million migrants could try to come to Europe via the eastern Mediterranean and Western Balkans next year was realistic.
"It would be a big achievement if we could keep the number ... stable," he told the magazine Der Spiegel.
Merkel said all EU states should have an interest in protecting the bloc's external borders, and all would suffer if the internal passport-free Schengen zone collapsed and national borders were closed.
AfD leader Frauke Petry told the Mannheimer Morgen newspaper that Germany needed to reduce the influx through agreements with neighboring Austria and a reinforcement of the EU's external borders.
But she also said it should not be shy about turning people back and creating "border protection installations" - and that border guards should, if necessary, shoot at migrants trying to enter illegally.
No police officer wanted to shoot at a migrant, Petry said, adding "I don't want that either but, ultimately, deterrence includes the use of armed force".
Such comments evoke memories of Germany's Cold War division, when guards in the communist East, led by Erich Honecker, were under orders to shoot people attempting to cross the heavily fortified border into the West.
"The last German politician who let refugees be shot at was Erich Honecker," said Thomas Oppermann, a senior member of the Social Democrats.

Angelique Kerber stuns Serena Williams to claim Australian Open title – as it happened

The German pulled off an incredible 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over the world No1 to secure her first grand slam title and deny Williams a record-equalling 22nd

Angelique Kerber beats Serena Williams to win Australian Open title – video highlights

Then comes the champion, as Kerber holds aloft the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup. She can barely breathe when she comes to speak:

Serena, you are an inspiration, an unbelievable great person, so congrats for everything you did already. In the first round I was match point down so I was already one leg on the plane to Germany. I got a second chance and I take my chance. To win it, my dream came true tonight. My whole life I was working really hard, now I’m here and I can say I’m a grand slam champion. I have the best family, the best team in the world. I really enjoy this moment. Thank you so much. The best two weeks of my life, my career. I had goosebumps when I was playing. See you next year.

Apparently Kerber said she’d jump in the Yarra River a la Jim Courier if she won the title. She’s already welling up though as she finishes her speech and holds court on Rod Laver with the trophy.

Wow. That was only Williams’s fifth defeat in a grand slam final. She’d won 21 out of 25 before today. It’s the first time she’s lost the final set in a major final. Kerber had never even been in a grand slam final before today. Kerber has confounded the stats by playing the match of her life on the biggest stage of her life.

Gracious from Williams, who comes straight over to Kerber’s side of the court to congratulate the victor. The pair embrace, Williams has some warm words for the German, who then resumes her celebrations by going to her players’ box. Williams can’t watch as she sits slumped in her chair. It was Roberta Vinci who ended Williams’s hopes of matching Graf’s grand slam record at the US Open; now it’s Kerber who has put history on hold in Australia. Unglaublich. I’m sure a certain German is watching in Las Vegas with a smile on her face.

Kerber wins the Australian Open title 6-4, 3-6, 6-4!

Kerber’s face has the expression of a woman who thinks her moment has passed. She needs to shake that off, because if she were to win this game, she would still be the Australian Open champion. She manages to quickly get herself out of the funk by taking the first point. And the second! 0-30. Williams opts for her go-to serve down the T. Ace. 15-30. Williams goes for a rocket of a serve out wide but misses. The second serve lands in, the pair engage in a lengthy duel from the back of the court, Kerber, perhaps waiting for Williams to miss rather than going for a winner herself, retreats well beyond the baseline and is eventually beaten. 30-all. Will it be game point or will it be match point? Game point, when Williams sets the point up with a gutsy forehand down the line and then goes t’other way for the winner. 40-30. Now Kerber is behind in the game, she finds it within herself to attack. Deuce. Kerber goes toe-to-toe with Williams in a breathtaking cross-court exchange and brings up championship point! Williams comes to the net but inexplicably misses the volley which loops long! I can’t believe I’m writing this but Angelique Kerber is the Australian Open champion! Yes, Angelique Kerber is the Australian Open champion!
