Betty MacDonald Memorial Award Winner Wolfgang Hampel, Betty MacDonald's letters, Barney Frank

The biography shows how Barney Frank, by turns brilliant, witty or cranky, may be a victim of oversimplification.

Betty MacDonald fan club fans,

Betty MacDonald fan club newsletter April contains a fascinating article by Anita and Eartha Kitt II.

Their favourite subject is Betty  MacDonald fan club letter collection with several new very important donations.

Leading the struggle for personal freedom and economic fairness over nearly five decades in Congress, Barney Frank is widely considered one of the smartest, funniest, and most influential politicians of our time.

In his candid and witty new memoir, Frank recounts his journey from the outskirts of New York City to U.S. Congress, from the battle over AIDS funding in the 1980s to debates over "big government" during the Clinton years to the 2008 financial crisis, and from a closeted gay man to the first member of Congress to voluntarily disclose his homosexuality.

What he gives us is not only a moving story of an extraordinary life, but a look at how political change really happens. Following an introduction by Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, Frank will present his new memoir and discuss his remarkable life in politics in conversation with Eric Liu.

Enjoy!

Which song is our most popular Eurovision Song Contest winner ever?

I adore this singer very much.

Enjoy the new breakfast at the bookstore with Brad and Nick.

Betty MacDonald fan club interviews on CD/DVD

Monday, March 16, 2015

Betty MacDonald Memorial Award Winner Wolfgang Hampel

Wolfgang Hampel and Betty MacDonald fan club fans,

speaking of special birthday anniversaries during March, what about Betty MacDonald's husband Donald MacDonald?

Donald Chauncey MacDonald was born Sept. 2, 1910, in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
He died in 1975 at the age of only 65 in Monterey.

I'm working on a story about Donald Chauncey MacDonald with many facts, information and photos for Betty MacDonald Newsletter April 2015.

Betty MacDonald Memorial Award Winner Wolfgang Hampel's wonderful Betty MacDonald interviews with Betty MacDonald's beloved sister Alison Bard Burnett and many other relatives and friends include the most interesting memories of Donald Chauncey MacDonald.
I hope these interviews will be published soon.

Wolfgang Hampel's  Betty MacDonald documentary of Betty MacDonald's life in Boulder, Butte, Seattle, Laurelhurst, Chimacum, Vashon Island, Carmel and Carmel Valley is really fascinating.
My personal favourites are scenes of Betty's and Don's life in Carmel and Carmel Valley.

I hope that Betty MacDonald's filmed interview will be available soon.

Wolfgang Hampel's satirical poems and stories are delightful and so very witty.
It's a very good idea to offer a special CD and DVD of Wolfgang Hampel's outstanding work.

You'll adore Darsie Beck's beautifully written childhood memories of Vashon Island.

Take care,

Nena

Wolfgang Hampel in an interview with CECELIA GOODNOW Seattle P.I. Reporter:

Betty MacDonald's fame lives on - a fact that becomes clear after just a few minutes with the ebullient Wolfgang Hampel. ``I think Betty MacDonald is very popular because she had a very hard life, but she could also smile, and she had for every situation a laugh," he said. ``Our life is tragicomedy, and she showed this. It's a masterpiece, her books. On his Seattle visit Wolfgang Hampel gathered anecdotes from relatives and friends, Wolfgang Hampel treasures such recollections. ``Everyone said to me, `She was the most wonderful person in the world I've ever met.'

The Egg and I by Betty MacDonald

". . .I realized why it is so much easier for a man to adjust himself to new surroundings and people than for a woman. Men are so much less demanding in friendship. A woman wants her friends to be perfect. She sets a pattern, usually a reasonable facsimile of herself, lays a friend out on this pattern and worries and prods at any little qualities which do not coincide with her own image. She simply won't be bothered with anything less than ninety per cent congruity, and will accept the ninety per cent only if the other ten per cent is shaping up nicely and promises accurate conformity within a short time. Friends with glaring lumps or unsmoothable rough places are cast off like ill-fitting garments, and even if this means that the woman has no friends at all, she seems happier than with some imperfect being for whom she would have to make allowances. A man has a friend, period. He acquires this particular friend because they both like to hunt ducks. The fact that the friend discourses entirely in four-letter words, very seldom washes, chews tobacco and spits and random, is drunk a good deal of the time and hates women, in no way affects the friendship. If the man notices these flaws in the perfection of his friend, he notices them casually as he does his friend's height, the color of his eyes, the width of his shoulders; and the friendship continues at an even temperature for years and years and years."

sooooo much truth, it's killing me
not only do I love this book and this writer because she is real and honest, but also because she can be asolutely hilarious when writing about things that were really hard for her.
and.... she wrote some books that were part of my favorite list as a child... Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle anyone??
